Spanish for Citizenship: How to Pass the DELE A2 and CCSE Exams

If you’re applying for Spanish nationality by residency, the law requires you to pass two exams run by the Instituto Cervantes: the DELE A2 (proving basic Spanish) and the CCSE (proving knowledge of the Spanish constitution and culture). Neither is designed to trip you up — pass rates are high — but both punish people who turn up unprepared. Here’s exactly what’s involved.

(Applicants from Spanish-speaking countries are exempt from the DELE A2; almost everyone must sit the CCSE.)

The DELE A2: what it actually tests

A2 is a genuinely basic level — everyday transactions, simple descriptions, familiar topics. The exam has four parts:

Reading (60 minutes) — short everyday texts: adverts, notices, emails, simple articles, with multiple-choice questions.

Listening (about 35 minutes) — announcements, short conversations and messages, played twice.

Writing (45 minutes) — two short tasks, typically a personal email and a simple description or diary-style text. Around 70–80 words each; simple, correct sentences beat ambitious broken ones.

Speaking (about 12 minutes plus preparation time) — a monologue on a familiar topic, a photo description, and a role-play conversation with the examiner (booking a table, making an appointment, shopping).

You need 30 out of 50 in each of the two grouped skill pairs to pass. Results take two to three months — factor that into your application timeline.

The CCSE: the culture and constitution test

The CCSE is a 45-minute multiple-choice test: 25 questions, and you need 15 correct to pass. Crucially, the entire question bank of 300 questions is published in advance by the Instituto Cervantes and refreshed each year. There are no surprises — every question in your exam comes from that bank, covering government and law, rights and duties, geography, culture, history and practical life in Spain (how to register with a doctor, what the DNI is, and so on).

This makes preparation mechanical: work through the official question bank until you’re consistently scoring above 80% in practice. The official “CCSE al día” materials and app are free. Most people need two to four weeks of light daily practice. Pass rates are very high — but the people who fail are almost always those who assumed general knowledge would carry them through questions about, say, which article of the constitution covers what.

Note the practical details: the CCSE runs on the last Thursday of most months, you book through the Instituto Cervantes website, and the pass certificate is valid for four years.

A combined preparation plan

If your Spanish is already conversational: book both exams now (dates fill up in major cities), spend two weeks on the CCSE question bank, and spend your remaining time on DELE writing and speaking practice — the two parts where nerves and unfamiliarity with the format cost marks.

If your Spanish is genuinely basic: give yourself three months. Prioritise listening and speaking — the written parts of A2 are manageable with modest vocabulary, but the live role-play punishes anyone who has never practised real-time conversation. Do the CCSE bank in the final month; it doubles as reading practice.

Common failure points: leaving the writing tasks unfinished (keep it simple and complete), freezing in the role-play (rehearse the standard scenarios until they’re automatic), and underestimating the CCSE’s specificity.
