Cambridge B2 First (FCE): The Complete Guide for 2026

The Cambridge B2 First — still widely known by its old name, FCE — is one of the most recognised English qualifications in the world. Unlike IELTS or TOEFL scores, which expire after two years, a Cambridge certificate is valid for life, which makes it a genuinely durable line on your CV. It certifies upper-intermediate English: the level at which you can work, study and live comfortably in the language.

Here’s what you’re facing and how to prepare for it.

The format: four papers

Reading and Use of English (75 minutes) — seven parts covering reading comprehension, grammar and vocabulary. The Use of English sections are the exam’s sharpest teeth: multiple-choice cloze, open cloze, word formation and the infamous key word transformations, where you rewrite a sentence using a given word without changing the meaning. These reward precise grammar knowledge — collocations, phrasal verbs, dependent prepositions — far more than general fluency.

Writing (80 minutes) — two tasks of 140–190 words each. Part 1 is always an essay. Part 2 offers a choice: article, email/letter, report or review. Examiners mark on content, communicative achievement, organisation and language — meaning a well-structured piece with clear paragraphs and linking words scores better than an ambitious but chaotic one.

Listening (about 40 minutes) — four parts, from short extracts to a longer interview, played twice. Accents are mostly British but increasingly varied.

Speaking (14 minutes, in pairs) — an interview, a one-minute solo turn comparing two photographs, a collaborative task with your partner, and a discussion. The pair format surprises people: you’re assessed partly on interaction — asking your partner’s opinion, building on their answers — not just on monologuing well.

Scoring

Each paper is converted to the Cambridge English Scale. You need an overall 160 to pass with grade C; 173–179 is grade A, which actually certifies C1-level English. Crucially, the score is an average across papers — a strong Reading paper can rescue a weaker Listening. Score 140–159 and you still receive a certificate at B1 level, so the exam is rarely a total loss.

A realistic preparation plan

Three months out: sit a full past paper under timed conditions to find your baseline. Cambridge publishes official past papers — they’re the only fully reliable practice material. Identify your weakest paper; that’s where the points are.

Two months out: drill Use of English daily in small doses. Key word transformations respond superbly to little-and-often practice because the same grammar points recur constantly — passives, reported speech, conditionals, comparatives, phrasal verbs. Keep a notebook of every transformation pattern you meet.

One month out: write two timed essays a week and get them corrected — writing is the paper where feedback matters most, because you cannot see your own errors. Practise the speaking format with a partner or tutor until the photo comparison (“both pictures show… whereas…”) is automatic.

Exam week: full mock, then rest. Cramming grammar the night before a speaking exam helps nobody.

The mistakes that cost marks

Ignoring the word count in Writing (both under and over are penalised through lost content or lost control). Leaving blanks in Use of English — there’s no negative marking, so always guess. Monologuing in the Speaking paper instead of interacting. And preparing only with coursebooks rather than timed past papers — exam technique is worth a full grade.
