DELE vs SIELE: Which Spanish Exam Should You Take in 2026?

If you need to certify your Spanish — for university, work, visas or citizenship — you’ll quickly meet two acronyms: DELE and SIELE. Both are official, both are backed by the Instituto Cervantes, and they work completely differently. Choosing the right one saves you money, time and possibly a retake.

The fundamental difference

DELE (Diploma de Español como Lengua Extranjera) is a traditional exam. You choose a level in advance — A1 through C2 — sit a paper-based exam on a fixed date at an official centre, and either pass or fail that level. Pass, and you hold a diploma that never expires.

SIELE is DELE’s modern, digital sibling. It’s taken on a computer, bookable almost any week of the year, and — crucially — it’s multi-level: you don’t choose a level, you simply take the test and receive a score (0–1000) that maps onto the CEFR scale from A1 to C1. There’s no passing or failing. The catch: the certificate expires after five years.

Format and content

DELE tests four skills — reading, listening, writing and speaking — with the speaking test conducted face-to-face with an examiner. Exams run on roughly five fixed dates per year, and results famously take up to three months.

SIELE tests the same four skills (in its complete “SIELE Global” version), but speaking is recorded into the computer rather than performed live. You can also take individual skill modules if you only need, say, reading and listening certified. Results arrive in about three weeks, and you can book a sitting within days rather than waiting for the next official date.

Recognition: the deciding factor

This is where the choice usually makes itself.

Spanish citizenship and immigration: Spain’s citizenship process requires the DELE A2 (or higher) specifically — SIELE is not accepted for this purpose. If citizenship is your goal, the decision is already made.

Universities: both are widely accepted across Spain and Latin America, but requirements vary — always check the specific institution. Some postgraduate programmes name DELE explicitly.

Employers: both carry weight. DELE’s lifetime validity gives it the edge for a CV you’ll use for decades; SIELE’s granular score can be more informative for recruiters.

SIELE’s home turf: it was co-created with the national universities of Mexico and Buenos Aires as well as the University of Salamanca, so it deliberately embraces pan-Hispanic Spanish — expect accents and vocabulary from across the Spanish-speaking world, not just Spain. (DELE has broadened here too, but its centre of gravity remains peninsular.)

Cost and logistics

Prices vary by country and level, but as a rough guide: DELE runs from around €110 for A1 to over €200 for C2; the full SIELE Global costs about €155, with individual modules cheaper. SIELE’s flexibility is a real advantage if you’re on a deadline — visa applications and university offers rarely wait three months for DELE results.

So which should you take?

Choose DELE if: you need it for Spanish citizenship or a process that names it; you want a qualification that never expires; you perform well in traditional exams and can plan around fixed dates.

Choose SIELE if: you need certification quickly; you’re not sure of your level (multi-level means you can’t “fail”); you prefer computer-based tests; or your Spanish leans Latin American.
